World’s wealthiest cities report includes and ranks cities from across the world in terms of the count of residents whose liquid investable wealth is either $1 million or more. The list of world’s wealthiest cities ranks top 50 cities in the world in the order of the number of millionaire residents.
The United States takes the lead with 11 of its cities featuring in this list. According to report by international wealth migration specialists Henley and Partners, together with the global data intelligence firm New World Wealth, New York is the wealthiest city in the world. Top 10 Wealthiest Cities in the World
1. New York – United States
The combined wealth of New York City residents has surpassed $3 trillion, exceeding the total wealth held by many major G20 countries. The city is home to an impressive 349,500 millionaires, 744 centi-millionaires (investable wealth greater than $100 million), and 60 billionaires.
2. The Bay Area – United States
The Bay Area of Northern California, which includes San Francisco and Silicon Valley, comes in second. The Bay Area has one of the world’s fastest wealth growth rates, with the number of millionaires increasing by an impressive 82% over the last decade. Currently, the region has 305,700 millionaires, 675 centimillionaires, and 68 billionaires.
3. Tokyo – Japan
Tokyo, once the world’s wealthiest city, has seen a 5% drop in its population of high-net-worth individuals over the last decade. Currently, it ranks third, with 298,300 millionaires, 267 centimillionaires, and 14 billionaires.
4. Singapore – Singapore
Singapore has risen two spots to fourth place in the global rankings, thanks to a remarkable 64% increase in millionaires over the last decade. It appears that it will soon surpass Tokyo as Asia’s wealthiest city. Singapore is well-known as one of the world’s most business-friendly cities, and it is also a popular destination for millionaires looking to relocate. In 2023 alone, approximately 3,400 high-net-worth individuals moved there. Currently, the city has 244,800 resident millionaires, 336 centimillionaires, and 30 billionaires.
5. London – United Kingdom
London, which was once considered the wealthiest city in the world, has fallen further down the rankings and is now ranked fifth. It is home to only 227,000 millionaires, 370 centimillionaires, and 35 billionaires, a 10% decrease over the last decade.
6. Los Angeles – United States
Los Angeles, with 212,100 millionaires, 496 centi-millionaires, and 43 billionaires, has risen two spots in ten years to take sixth place. The city’s affluent population has grown significantly, by 45%.
7. Paris – France
Paris is the wealthiest city in mainland Europe! With 165,000 resident millionaires, it has maintained its seventh-place ranking among the top ten wealthiest cities. It has 286 centimillionaires and 23 billionaires.
8. Sydney – Australia
Sydney has risen to the eighth spot on the list, with 147,000 high-net-worth individuals, after experiencing remarkable wealth growth over the last two decades. It has 205 centimillionaires and 20 billionaires.
9. Hong Kong – Hong Kong (SAR China)
China has had a significant impact on the latest Top 50 Wealthiest Cities ranking, with five mainland Chinese cities on the list. When Hong Kong (SAR China) with 143,400 millionaires and Taipei (30,200) are included, the total number rises to seven cities. Over the last decade, Hong Kong has dropped four places to ninth in the rankings.
10. Beijing – China
Beijing, with 125,600 millionaires, has entered the Top 10 for the first time, following a remarkable 90% increase in its millionaire population over the last decade. Despite Hong Kong’s decline, Shanghai (123,400), Shenzhen (50,300), Guangzhou (24,500), and Hangzhou (31,600) have all experienced significant increases in their millionaire populations.
Which Indian Cities Feature in World’s Top 50 Wealthiest Cities
Two Indian cities have made it to the list of World’s top 50 Wealthiest cities. These are Mumbai and Delhi at 24th and 37th ranks respectively.
Mumbai
Mumbai, India, is among the world’s top 50 wealthiest cities, ranking 24th with 58,800 millionaires, 236 centi-millionaires, and 29 billionaires.
Delhi
Delhi, India’s national capital, is ranked 37th on the list of the world’s top 50 wealthiest cities, with 30,700 millionaires, 123 centimillionaires, and 16 billionaires.
It is also interesting to note that Monaco is the most expensive city in the world with apartment prices regularly exceeding USD 35,000 per sq. meter. New York is the second most expensive city in the world with the average price of prime real estate being USD 28,400 per sq. meter, followed by London (USD 26,500 per per sq. meter), Hong Kong (USD 25,800 per per sq. meter), Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat in France (USD 25,000 per per sq. meter), and Sydney (USD 22,700 per per sq. meter).
