According to the latest transparency report released by Meta, these bans were enforced between August 1 and August 31, 2024. Meta’s report highlights that WhatsApp banned approximately 8.45 million accounts in India during August 2024. The breakdown of the bans is as follows:

  • 1.66 million accounts were removed immediately due to severe violations.
  • Over 1.6 million accounts were proactively flagged and banned using AI-powered monitoring before user complaints were registered.
  • The remaining accounts were banned after multiple complaints and subsequent investigations.

These actions align with India’s Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, particularly under Section 4(1)(d) and Section 3A(7), which mandate digital platforms to take strict action against misuse.

Why Were These WhatsApp Accounts Banned?

WhatsApp has outlined several reasons behind these large-scale bans, including:

1. Violation of WhatsApp’s Terms of Service

  • Sending bulk or automated messages using unauthorized third-party tools.
  • Spamming users with promotional or misleading messages.
  • Spreading false or harmful information that could mislead the public.

2. Engagement in Illegal Activities

  • Involvement in fraud, phishing attacks, impersonation scams, and financial fraud.
  • Accounts linked to illegal betting, drug trafficking, or extremist activities under Indian law were flagged and removed.

3. User Complaints and Reports

  • WhatsApp received 10,707 user complaints in August 2024, leading to immediate action in 93% of cases.
  • Complaints related to harassment, abuse, and inappropriate content triggered the most bans.

4. AI-Powered Monitoring and Automated Detection

  • WhatsApp’s AI and machine learning tools proactively flagged over 1.6 million accounts before user complaints were filed.
  • Advanced algorithms detected spam and fraudulent activity patterns, preventing users from falling victim to scams.
