Payment Failures and Login Issues
Google Pay users were hit hardest, with 72% of complaints related to failed payments, while others struggled with app access (14%) and website issues (14%). Paytm saw even higher disruption rates, with 86% of users reporting payment failures. Banking services weren’t spared either—State Bank of India (SBI) customers faced problems with fund transfers (47%), mobile banking (37%), and online transactions (16%).

Social media quickly flooded with frustrated users sharing screenshots of failed transactions. Some reported that while money was initially deducted from their accounts, it was later refunded with a “UPI down” error message.

No Official Explanation Yet
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which oversees UPI, has not released any statement on the cause of the outage. Moneycontrol attempted a test transaction, only to have the amount reversed minutes later due to the ongoing technical glitch.

As of now, the exact reason behind the nationwide UPI crash remains unclear. With digital payments becoming a daily necessity for millions, the disruption highlights India’s growing reliance on—and vulnerability to—tech-dependent financial systems.
