Trump Proposes Automatic Green Cards for Foreign Students, but Faces Criticism
Former US President Donald Trump has made headlines with a surprising proposal to grant automatic green cards to foreign students graduating from US colleges.
Trump, known for his stringent immigration policies during his presidency, stated in the ‘All-In’ podcast, “What I want to do and what I will do is — you graduate from a college, I think you should get a Green Card automatically as part of your diploma, a Green Card to be able to stay in this country. And that includes junior colleges too.”
This proposal represents a significant departure from Trump’s past rhetoric on immigration, where he has often taken a hardline stance. However, critics have pointed out the apparent inconsistency with Trump’s previous policies. In 2016, Trump made similar promises but then implemented measures to curtail legal immigration during his presidency.
During his time in office, Trump proposed various restrictions on legal immigration, including curbs on family-based visas and the visa lottery program. He also issued the “Buy American and Hire American” executive order, aimed at prioritizing American workers in the job market.
Trump’s latest proposal has sparked a range of reactions, with some applauding the move as a step towards attracting and retaining talent in the US, while others criticize it for potentially increasing competition for college spots and jobs for American students.
While the proposal could benefit many immigrants, including high-skilled Indian professionals, critics argue that it may be more of a strategic move to garner support from immigrant communities ahead of the election rather than a genuine ideological shift. Trump’s history of making bold promises during campaigns, some of which have not materialized, adds complexity to his latest proposal.
