Toll Hikes Take Effect Across India’s Highways

Starting April 1, 2025, toll charges on India’s national highways have increased as part of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI)’s latest fee revision. This marks the second hike in less than a year, following adjustments made in June 2024. The move aims to generate additional funds for highway maintenance, expansion, and safety upgrades, but has drawn mixed reactions from frequent travelers.

Key Changes in Toll Rates

  • Cars & Jeeps: INR 5–10 increase per trip on most routes.
  • Trucks & Buses: INR 20–25 hike per journey.
  • Delhi-Meerut Expressway: One-way toll for cars up from INR 165 to 170.
  • Bengaluru Airport Route: Single-journey toll for cars now INR 120 (up from INR 115).
  • Himachal Pradesh: 24-hour pass for private vehicles rises from INR 60 to 70.

New Toll Pass Options for Frequent Travelers

To ease the burden on regular commuters, the government is considering annual and lifetime toll passes:

  • INR 3,000/year for unlimited highway access.
  • INR 30,000 for 15 years (one-time payment).

This could benefit daily commuters and long-distance travelers, though official rollout details are still pending.

Public Reaction: Necessary Upgrade or Added Burden?

While some acknowledge the need for better roads, others criticize the back-to-back toll hikes. The NHAI assures that the extra revenue will improve road conditions, reduce travel time, and enhance safety measures.

What Should Travelers Do?

  • Check updated toll rates before planning trips.
  • Explore toll pass options if you frequently use highways.
  • Expect slight delays as toll plazas adjust to new systems.

With infrastructure development in focus, these hikes are likely here to stay—commuters will need to factor in the added costs for their journeys.
