Soon your iPhone could be Tata manufactured, right here in India! Details
PuneNow, July 11, 2023: The Tata group, an Indian multinational conglomerate, is on track to become the first company in India to manufacture iPhones. This is attributed to the possibility of Tata acquiring Wistron Corp’s iPhone manufacturing project, making it a significant move in the technology industry.
Sources close to the matter reveal that the Tata group may purchase a Wistron Corp factory located in Karnataka by August this year, valued over $60 million. The company has been in negotiation for the deal over the past year. Presently, the factory employs at least 10,000 workers and is responsible for the production of the latest iPhone 14.
As part of the central government’s economic stimulus package, Wistron has pledged to ship iPhones worth $1.8 billion from this factory in the current financial year. The company’s aim is to triple its workforce on the project by next year. Upon Tata’s takeover of the factory, Wistron will have to cease its iPhone business operations in India. Representatives from Tata, Wistron, and Apple have yet to comment on the matter.
The transfer of iPhone assembly to Tata is expected to help Apple diversify its production base. From March to June this year, Wistron has exported iPhones worth $500 million. Other Apple suppliers such as Foxconn Technology Group and Pegatron Corp have similarly been expanding their local assembly operations.
If the acquisition goes through, this will mark a significant step in increasing India’s role in the global technology manufacturing sector.
