With an estimated cost of ₹50,000 crore, this ambitious project is part of the Bharatmala Pariyojna Phase 2 initiative. The expressway will feature six lanes with a maximum speed limit of 120 km/h, ensuring faster and more efficient travel. It will also connect with the Pune-Mumbai Expressway at Pune, enhancing accessibility between these major cities.

The expressway will pass through Maharashtra districts such as Sangli, Satara, and Pune before entering Karnataka. In Karnataka, it will cover key regions including Belagavi, Bagalkot, Gadag, Koppal, Vijayanagara, Davanagere, Chitradurga, Tumakuru, and Bengaluru. The project will culminate at the proposed satellite ring road in the Muthagadahalli area of the Bengaluru Metropolitan Region.

Expected to be completed by 2028, the new expressway will serve as an alternative to National Highway 48, offering a faster and more convenient route. This development is set to bring substantial improvements to regional road infrastructure, benefiting both commuters and businesses.
