Initially, rumors suggested that 10 to 12 infants had been abandoned, but authorities later clarified that only one fully formed newborn was found, while the other containers held human body parts and medical waste, including cancerous tissues and intestines.

Police Investigation Underway

Deputy Superintendent of Police Bapurao Dadas confirmed that the male fetus has been sent for post-mortem to determine the cause of death. “We are investigating whether this was a case of illegal abortion, infanticide, or improper disposal of medical waste,” he said.

Authorities are scrutinizing 7-8 local hospitals, particularly those handling surgeries and gynecological procedures, to trace the source of the waste. A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for negligent disposal of biomedical waste.

Political and Public Outrage

The incident has sparked widespread condemnation, with Baramati MP Supriya Sule calling it a “heinous act” and demanding immediate action.

Women’s commission reacts:

The Maharashtra State Women’s Commission has also intervened, directing police to submit a detailed report.

Forensic experts are examining the remains, while medical officials suspect some of the tissues may have been preserved since 2020 and accidentally discarded.

Broader Concerns Over Medical Waste Mismanagement

This case has reignited concerns about illegal abortions and improper biomedical waste disposal by hospitals. Activists are demanding stricter enforcement of waste management protocols to prevent such horrific incidents in the future.

As the investigation continues, the Daund police have urged anyone with information to come forward.
