What is UMTA and why it matters to you?

If you’ve ever struggled with changing buses, metros, or trains to reach your destination—this new step is for you. Right now, different agencies manage different types of transport: buses, metro trains, and local trains are all run separately. This often causes confusion, delays, and extra travel costs.

The UMTA Bill aims to fix that. By bringing all transport systems under one single authority, travel will become much simpler and smoother for everyday commuters. You could have a single ticket to switch between a metro and a bus, fewer delays due to better coordination, and possibly even improved travel services.

One ticket, smoother travel

CM Fadnavis said that the UMTA will create a “unified institutional framework” where all modes of transport will be planned and operated together. This means less confusion, a common fare system, and faster project execution.

“This step is all about modern, efficient city travel that puts citizens first,” he said. “We want to remove unnecessary delays, ensure better service, and make your daily commute much easier.”

What’s next?

Officials have been asked to speed up the formal setup of UMTA. A dedicated CEO and executive committee will be appointed to make sure the system runs efficiently. Importantly, UMTA will work closely with local governments to make sure city-specific needs are taken care of.

CM Fadnavis assured that the new system will focus on better coordination, smoother travel, and ease of access for all.

Deputy CM Eknath Shinde and other senior officials also participated in the meeting.
