Residents of Wakad and Tathawade in Pune held a silent march on Saturday to protest against the severe air pollution caused by ready mix concrete (RMC) plants in the area. Over 500 residents, predominantly IT professionals from more than 22 housing societies under the Wakad-Tathawade Housing Societies Forum, participated in the peaceful protest.

The protesters highlighted that 10 RMC plants, five of which are located in close proximity to residential areas, are contributing to hazardous air quality. The march began at Kohinoor Courtyard One Society, passed through Indira School, and concluded at Wakadkar Chowk. Residents allege that despite repeated complaints to the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), and PMRDA, no concrete action has been taken to address the issue over the past two years.

The air quality index (AQI) in the area was recorded at 310 on the day of the protest, categorizing it as hazardous. Residents claim that cement dust and heavy vehicle movement have led to a surge in respiratory illnesses, particularly among children, senior citizens, and pregnant women. A thick layer of cement dust often settles on roads, vehicles, and homes, severely impacting their quality of life.

Residents expressed frustration over the lack of accountability among authorities, stating that complaints are being passed between PCMC, MPCB, and PMRDA without resolution. Despite temporary preventive measures initiated by MPCB following the announcement of the protest, residents demand long-term solutions to combat the deteriorating air quality.
