Pune: Video | Beloved Toy Train “Phulrani” Turns 70, Continues To Delight Generations At Peshwe Park

Pune, 8th April 2025: Pune’s iconic toy train “Phulrani”, a symbol of childhood nostalgia for generations, celebrated its 70th anniversary today (8th April) at Peshwe Park. The miniature train, which has been delighting children and adults alike since 1956, marked its platinum jubilee with a heartwarming celebration organized by the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) Garden Department.
Launched on 8th April 1956, Phulrani was inaugurated in a unique way — by 4.5-year-old Vasundhara Dange, making it one of the rare events where a child led such a significant moment. The event was graced by the presence of social reformer and educationist Maharshi Dhondo Keshav Karve, highlighting the importance of creating child-friendly spaces in the city.
Phulrani initially ran on a diesel engine and resembled a full-sized train. Over the years, it has adapted with time and technology. Today, it operates on battery power, taking the form of an open-air, jeep-style ride. With three coaches, the train continues to take its passengers on a charming ride through Peshwe Park, surrounded by nature.
To mark its 70th year, a cake-cutting ceremony was held at 11 am at Peshwe Park, attended by excited children and their parents. The event was coordinated by PMC’s Garden Department under the supervision of Superintendent Ashok Ghorpade.
According to Ghorpade, Phulrani remains a major attraction in the city. In the last financial year alone, over 83,000 visitors — both children and adults — enjoyed the train ride, generating approximately ₹12.41 lakh in revenue for the PMC.
Phulrani’s journey is closely connected with the development of Peshwe Park. While the park and the train were initially managed by PMC, in 2002, the Maharashtra Energy Development Authority (MEDA) took over the park to create an energy park, transitioning Phulrani from diesel to solar power. In 2009, PMC regained control, and in 2012, the train received a new engine and bogies, continuing as a battery-operated joyride.
Phulrani is more than just a toy train — it’s a treasure chest of memories for many Puneites. Visitors recall their school picnics, family outings, and even their children’s first rides on the iconic train.
Actress Sonali Kulkarni reminisced about the charm of waiting in line for a ride as a child and expressed pride in Phulrani’s legacy. TV actor Shrikar Pitre fondly remembered making friends during his weekend rides on the train. Actress Ketaki Kadam praised Pune for maintaining its simplicity and preserving childhood gems like Phulrani.
Even today, as vacation season brings in large crowds, Phulrani remains a timeless attraction for both young and old, continuing to create unforgettable moments at Peshwe Park.
