Pune: Uber’s Zero Commission Policy Brings Relief to Auto-Rickshaw Drivers

Pune, March 25, 2025 – Uber’s decision to eliminate commissions for auto-rickshaw trips has brought significant relief to drivers in Pune. Under the new system, drivers retain 100% of the fare, with no cancellation charges, and both riders and drivers can negotiate the final fare directly – Uber will not intervene in any disputes.
The ride-hailing platform transitioned its auto-rickshaw service to a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model in February, where the app connects riders with nearby drivers but operates independently from Uber’s payment system. Passengers now pay drivers directly via cash or UPI, with Uber’s fare serving only as a recommendation. The auto drivers pay a fixed amount of Rs.19 per day to Uber to get the rides on their phone.
Feedback from Drivers:
The new policy has been widely welcomed by auto-rickshaw drivers, who say the removal of commissions and cancellation fees has significantly improved their earnings. Many drivers appreciate the flexibility to negotiate fares directly with passengers, as it allows them to account for factors like traffic conditions and fuel costs.
The shift to direct cash or UPI payments has also been praised for ensuring instant payments, eliminating delays caused by digital transactions. Drivers report fewer disputes with passengers, as the ability to discuss fares upfront leads to more transparent and mutually agreeable pricing. Overall, the change has empowered drivers, giving them greater control over their income and improving their experience on the platform.
