In order to streamline traffic flow and reduce congestion, the Pune City Police’s traffic department has introduced signal-free corridors at key junctions, inspired by road systems in New Delhi and abroad.
Following the success of the signal-free stretch from Fatimanagar to Bhairoba Nala, the initiative is now being experimented at Vimannagar and Pune-Ahmednagar Road, particularly near Phoenix Mall at Parnakuti police chowki.
Additional Commissioner of Police Manoj Patil highlighted the department’s focus on minimizing confusion and ensuring commuter safety. “Traffic signals, especially at right turns, often disrupt vehicle flow. The signal-free system, which has already proven effective on Fatimanagar and Bhairoba Nala roads, is being expanded to Pune-Ahmednagar Road to enhance road safety and efficiency,” he said.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Subhash Nikam mentioned that the newly implemented changes at Vimannagar junction and near Phoenix Mall have already shown noticeable improvements in traffic flow.
Residents have welcomed the initiative, citing reduced road rage, pollution, and commuting delays. A local resident and social worker praised the development, stating, “Commuting has become safer and faster, with fewer accidents and less chaos.” Another resident, a long-time member of a community organization, echoed these sentiments, calling it one of the best changes in Pune’s traffic management in 25 years.
The Pune city police plan to monitor the effectiveness of these signal-free corridors and expand the model to other high-traffic areas in the city.
