Pune residents came together on Sunday for a ‘Chipko March’ to raise awareness about the importance of preserving riverside ecosystems. Inspired by the historic Chipko movement of the 1970s, where people hugged trees to prevent deforestation, the 1.2-kilometre march was organised by Pune River Revival, a group of concerned citizens and social organisations. Around 2,500 Punekars participated in the event, which began at Kalmadi High School in Baner and ended at the confluence of the Ram and Mula rivers.
The march aimed to highlight the threats posed by unsustainable development and climate change, such as floods, declining groundwater levels, and the loss of natural resources. Actor Sayaji Shinde and climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, known for his environmental efforts in Ladakh, inaugurated the event. Wangchuk expressed concern over Pune’s environmental challenges, stating, “Strong action is needed to protect the environment.” He also promised to discuss the issue with Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar.
Prajakta Mahajan of Pune River Revival emphasised the importance of green patches along rivers for flood prevention and ecological balance. She raised concerns about the recent destruction of heritage trees during river rejuvenation work. Sanjeev Naik, another volunteer, highlighted the role of riverside trees and wetlands in flood protection and groundwater recharge.
Participants, including students, youth, and residents from PMC and PCMC areas, hugged old-growth trees and wrote letters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging protection for trees and rivers. Arati Mhaskar, a Baner resident, stressed the need for eco-friendly riverfront development that does not involve cutting trees.
The event served as a call to action for the community to protect Pune’s natural assets and push for sustainable development practices.
