A tragic incident happened at the Park View housing society in Dhayari, Pune, on Tuesday evening when a six-year-old boy drowned in the stagnant waters of an under-maintenance swimming pool. The boy, identified as Yash Harshad Gosavi, had arrived at his grandparents’ flat in the society on Sunday with his parents for a summer vacation stay.

Yash, a Std II student from Khopoli, was playing with other children near the pool while his grandfather was at a senior citizens’ recreational facility. Around 8:30 pm, Yash was found floating in the pool, which had accumulated nearly 3 feet of stagnant water. He was rushed to a nearby private hospital and later to Sassoon General Hospital, where he was declared dead.

The Nanded City police have registered a case of accidental death and are investigating potential negligence by the society’s office-bearers. Senior Inspector Atul Bhos stated that the pool, which is 4 feet deep, was unguarded at night and lacked CCTV surveillance.

Residents and authorities raised concerns about the neglected pool, questioning why the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) had not taken action despite the health risks posed by stagnant water, including the spread of diseases like dengue and malaria. PMC officials clarified that private societies are responsible for maintaining their facilities, including swimming pools.

Society chairman Sanjay Pathare expressed shock over the incident, stating that the pool was under maintenance and usually guarded only during the day. The Gosavi family, originally from Shrigonda, Ahilyanagar district, is devastated by the loss of their only child.
