The Pune RTO has called for an urgent meeting with private passenger transport organizations this week to issue strict guidelines on vehicle fitness checks, maintenance, and safety protocols. Deputy Regional Transport Officer Swapnil Bhosale emphasized that a special campaign will be launched to conduct rigorous checks on vehicle fitness, insurance, PUC (Pollution Under Control) certificates, and other necessary documents.

The incident has also sparked discussions in the state assembly, prompting the RTO to take a tough stance. Starting next week, special squads will inspect private vehicles to ensure compliance with safety standards. Bhosale highlighted the importance of fire extinguishers, emergency exits, and driver training to prevent such tragedies in the future.

Private bus operators have been advised to adhere to RTO permits, avoid overloading, and ensure timely maintenance. Vehicles must also have first-aid kits, hammers for breaking windows, and two drivers for long journeys. Operators are prohibited from charging fares exceeding 1.5 times the MSRTC rates.

Rajendra Masale, a private bus operator, and Neelam Deshmukh, a member of the Pune private transport vehicles’ association, expressed their commitment to following RTO guidelines while urging the authorities to address challenges related to vehicle maintenance, especially during the summer months when fire incidents are more frequent.

This tragic incident serves as a wake-up call for the transport industry to prioritize safety and prevent such accidents in the future.
