Roseland Residency’s Conservation Drive

With rapid urbanization leading to dwindling green spaces, Roseland Residency residents have taken a stand to counteract the decline in the sparrow population.

Key Initiatives:

  • Artificial Nest Box & Feeder Distribution: Nest boxes and bird feeders have been distributed across 30 residential societies, police station, car cleaners, volunteers and the guests attending the event in the Pimpri-Chinchwad area.
  • Sparrow Exhibition & Selfie Point: An exhibition featuring sparrow conservation efforts and a selfie point has been set up at Roseland Residency Gate No. 4.
  • Water & Food Access: 60 earthen water pots, 100 bird feeders, and 300 nest boxes have been installed to help sparrows survive the harsh summer. The society’s car cleaners have pledged to refill the water pots daily.

Chandan Chaurasia: The Man Behind the Movement

Sparrow conservationist Chandan Chaurasia, who spearheaded the movement at Roseland Residency, shared his journey with PuneNow:

“When I moved here, it was a concrete jungle. We started with small steps—placing water bowls for birds. Soon, I installed nest boxes at my home and gradually expanded efforts within the society. It became a collective movement. By 2016, our efforts were recognized, and we received the Nature Forever Sparrow Award.”

The initiative has since expanded, with a WhatsApp group guiding 30 societies on proper nest placement, maintenance, and bird feeding.

Mohammed Dilawar: The Force Behind World Sparrow Day

Speaking exclusively to PuneNow, Mohammed Dilawar, Founder and President of the Nature Forever Society, emphasized the importance of grassroots efforts in saving house sparrows. He stated:

“House sparrows have coexisted with humans for over 10,000 years. They rely on human habitats, nesting in crevices, feeding on agricultural residue, and insects from native plants. No government effort alone can bring them back—it requires citizens’ active participation. If you want to join the conservation movement, you can reach out to us at www.natureforever.org or call +91 98900 87988.”

Police Stations Join the Cause

On March 18, the team visited Bhosari Police Station, where the police staff adopted 25 nest boxes, 15 bird feeders, and two water pots. The officers, including ACP Sachin Hire, ACP Bhaskar Dere, and Sandeep Ghorpade, assured their commitment to maintaining these installations. Plans are underway to extend this initiative to other police stations in the region.
