Pune Municipal Corporation is in the final stages of its ambitious ‘Roads Mission 15’ project aimed at improving traffic flow and enhancing the commuting experience for residents. The initiative focuses on resurfacing 15 key roads with high daily vehicle usage and is expected to be completed in the coming days.

So far, around 92 km of roads have been resurfaced, covering 60,772 square meters with fresh asphalt, providing smoother rides, especially for two-wheeler commuters. Excavation on these roads has been strictly prohibited to ensure the longevity of the new surfaces.

Enhanced Focus on Road Safety and Quality

The project has been expedited following a recent review meeting chaired by Union Minister of State Murlidhar Mohol, in the presence of State Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil, civic officials, and other dignitaries. The officials were directed to ensure the complete resurfacing of the identified roads and the repair of potholes by January 30.
Taking these instructions seriously, PMC’s roads department has been working round the clock to scrape off old surfaces, apply fresh asphalt, and ensure proper markings such as zebra crossings and stop lines. Minor works like painting are in their final stages, and the department anticipates significant improvements in traffic flow and congestion reduction.

Inspection and Commitment to Road Maintenance

An inspection tour was recently organized for journalists, revealing that the work on these roads is almost complete. The roads department is working in collaboration with traffic police to address congestion issues and ensure smoother traffic movement. Speed bumps have been removed, and further tarmacking work is in progress.
Additionally, to address safety concerns for commuters, the roads department has leveled 509 drainage chamber covers, which previously caused accidents and health issues due to uneven surfaces.

Next Phase and Continued Improvements

Once work on the initial 15 roads is completed, PMC will commence work on the remaining 17 roads in the second phase. The department has undertaken the responsibility of making all city roads smooth and pothole-free within the year.
