Pune Records Hottest First Week of March in a Decade; Temperatures Set to Cross 40°C – Yellow Alert for Mumbai and Konkan for Heatwave

Pune is experiencing an unprecedented rise in temperatures, marking the hottest first week of March in the past decade. Meteorological data reveals that the city has recorded an average maximum temperature of 36.6°C this week, significantly higher than previous years. With temperatures nearing the 40°C mark, residents are bracing for even hotter days ahead.

On Saturday, Shivajinagar recorded a high of 38°C, which was 3.1°C above normal. Other areas, including Koregaon Park (39.1°C) and Chinchwad (39.4°C), also reported soaring temperatures. According to IMD data, the first week of March 2025 has been the hottest in a decade, with average temperatures surpassing those of previous years. For instance, in 2024, the average was 34.5°C, while in 2015, it was just 28.4°C.

The heatwave is not limited to Pune. Other regions in Maharashtra, such as Solapur (39.1°C), Sangli (38.5°C), and Satara (38.2°C), are also experiencing extreme temperatures. Meteorologists predict that the mercury will continue to rise, with Pune likely to cross the 40°C mark soon. Pune scientist S.D. Sanap stated, “The temperature is expected to increase by 1-2 degrees in the next few days.”

Konkan on Yellow Alert for Heatwave

Many districts in Konkan, including Mumbai and Thane have placed on yellow alert for extremely hot climate, heatwave like conditions and heat wave for the next few days. Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg are also on yellow alert for heatwave.

Residents are advised to take precautions, including staying hydrated and avoiding sun exposure during peak hours. With heatwave conditions expected to intensify, it is crucial to stay updated with weather forecasts and prepare for the rising temperatures.
