Pune: Pune Metro Plans to Boost Train Frequency to Every 3 Minutes During Rush Hour
Pune Metro is set to enhance its train frequency to every three minutes during peak hours, aimed at minimizing wait times for commuters. This change will be implemented once the PCMC-Swargate and Vanaz-Ramwadi routes become fully operational. Currently, trains operate at seven-minute intervals during rush hours.
Officials indicated that the frequency increase will occur gradually, with an initial plan to reduce intervals to five minutes before reaching three minutes. Studies are ongoing to evaluate the technical requirements for these enhancements. Frequent commuters have expressed that the trains are often overcrowded during peak times, highlighting the need for longer trains.
Recent statistics reveal a significant rise in daily ridership, jumping to 1.5 lakh in September from just 50,000 last year. This surge is attributed to the opening of new stations on the Swargate and Vanaz routes, with expectations to reach 2 lakh daily passengers within six months.
Maha Metro officials confirmed that the primary focus is on increasing train frequency, with plans to add more coaches in the future. “Last year, trains ran every 10-15 minutes. Now, we have improved that to every seven minutes during peak hours and 10 minutes during non-peak hours. Currently, 28 stations are operational on the two routes. We are preparing both routes to handle a three-minute frequency,” stated a Metro official.
However, commuters have also pointed out the need for improved last-mile connectivity. Concerns have been raised regarding the lack of feeder autorickshaw services at some stations, which, if addressed, could significantly enhance the overall commuting experience.
In summary, Pune Metro’s initiative to increase train frequency aims to facilitate smoother travel for commuters and is a response to the growing demand for public transport in the region.
