Pune Police to Use AI to Reconstruct Porsche Accident in Kalyani Nagar
The Pune City Police’s crime branch is trying to take help of AI-based tools to reconstruct the Porsche crash in Kalyani Nagar, aiming to understand and visualize the accident and its impact.
This marks the first instance where Pune police are utilizing digital tools for such a purpose.
On May 19, around 2:30 am, a 17-year-old, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, rashly drove a Porsche, resulting in the tragic deaths of two software engineers, Aneesh Awadiya (24) and Ashwini Koshta (24).
According to a report by Pune Times Mirror, Additional Commissioner of Police Shailesh Balkawade confirmed the use of AI, stating, “There are AI-simulated models and core software that can create 3D images or walkthroughs using CCTV footage and photos from the scene.
Private labs in Hyderabad and Bengaluru offer services for crash impact assessment, which will be crucial for the Porsche road accident case. We are in the process of finalizing the firm to commence this work. We will provide all relevant CCTV footage from the crime incident, including the suspect’s home, pubs visited, and the accident site. This will help us gather detailed information and understand the crime’s intensity.”
A senior officer, who wished to remain anonymous, revealed, “We have already assembled ten squads to investigate this case. The CCTV footage of the accident is blurry, so we are enlisting cyber experts to digitally reconstruct the crime. The AI tool will help in determining the car’s speed and the impact on the victims, helping us ascertain the severity of the offences.”
He added, “The detailed reconstruction will include the road, the movements of commuters, and the exact number of people present. The digital model will recreate the route from the teenager’s home to Cosie Restaurant, Blak Club in Mundhwa, and finally to the accident site in Kalyani Nagar.”
