Pune: Police Launches Signal-Free Corridor on Ahmednagar Road to Ease Traffic Congestion

Pune Police has introduced a traffic signal-free corridor on Ahmednagar Road to address persistent traffic congestion issues. The initiative, implemented at key junctions including Shastrinagar, Wadgaonsheri, Viman Nagar (near Phoenix Mall), and Kharadi Dargha, aims to ensure smoother traffic flow from Kharadi to Wagholi.
Commissioner of Police Amitesh Kumar held a meeting on Saturday with public representatives and top officials to discuss the changes. Amol Zende, DCP (Traffic), stated that the initiative is being rolled out on an experimental and pilot basis with support from Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) officials and other stakeholders.
The traffic department has also intensified enforcement efforts, recovering ₹2.48 crore in fines through a special drive targeting violations such as wrong-side driving, drink and drive, triple-seat riding, illegal parking, and signal jumping. A total of 34,311 cases were registered during this campaign.
DCP Zende highlighted a significant improvement in traffic flow over the past few weeks, with congestion reduced considerably. Sanjeev Kumar Patil, Director of the Wagholi Housing Societies Association, expressed relief over the changes and called for more concrete solutions from authorities.
This initiative marks a significant step toward addressing Pune’s traffic challenges and improving commuter experiences on one of the city’s busiest stretches.
