Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is set to install new signboards at the Chandani Chowk multilevel flyover following complaints from commuters about confusion due to a lack of proper directional signage. A recent survey conducted by PMC engineers confirmed that additional signboards are required in several locations to improve navigation.

The Chandani Chowk flyover, which took six years to complete and was inaugurated in August 2023, continues to lack clear signage for key destinations such as Chandani Chowk, NDA, Kothrud, Mulshi, Bavdhan, Satara, and Mumbai. This has left motorists uncertain about the correct routes to take.

A PMC project department official stated, “After receiving complaints from citizens, we conducted a survey last month. We found that many people are confused, with over 50 motorists asking for directions to Mulshi, Mumbai, Kothrud, and Satara Road. While some signboards are present, they were installed improperly by the contractor. Now, we have identified the correct locations and have floated a tender to install new signboards.”

The issue of inadequate signage is particularly noticeable on roads connecting Kothrud to Bavdhan-Pashan and the Satara-Mumbai highway. Drivers traveling from Kothrud to Bavdhan must turn from NDA Road to reach the main square, where a wide road leads to Bavdhan. Motorists coming from Satara must take a separate road under the NDA bridge before taking the left-side bridge to Bavdhan and continuing toward Kothrud. However, without proper signboards, many drivers struggle to find their way.

Several commuters have shared their frustration over the issue, stating that a lack of clear signboards has caused them to take incorrect routes and waste time navigating back to their intended destinations. Many have also pointed out that the existing signposts are too small and difficult to see, further adding to the confusion.

The Chandani Chowk flyover, built at a cost of ₹865 crore by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), was developed to ease congestion at the critical junction that connects Hinjewadi IT Park, the Mumbai-Bangalore bypass, Mulshi Road, Paud Road, and Pashan Road. The foundation stone for the project was laid by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on August 27, 2017, and it was inaugurated in August 2023.

With the PMC now taking steps to address the signboard issue, commuters are hopeful that navigation at the flyover will soon become easier and safer.
