Pune: PCMC to Implement Action Plan to Ease Traffic Congestion at 25 Busy Junctions

Pimpri-Chinchwad is witnessing rapid urbanization, leading to severe traffic congestion at major junctions and arterial roads. In response, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has announced a comprehensive action plan to decongest 25 of the city’s busiest junctions. This initiative includes the development of missing link roads, parallel routes, flyover expansions, and improved road designs.
PCMC officials have identified these 25 critical junctions using Google Maps traffic data, inputs from the traffic police, and feedback from citizen forums. The primary aim of the project is to reduce travel time and enhance urban mobility.
Key Initiatives Under PCMC’s Traffic Action Plan:
- Missing Link Roads: Over 11.36 km of alternative routes are under development, with priority given to Kaspate Chowk, Pimpri-Kalewadi Road, Adarsh Nagar (Kiwale), and Bhatnagar.
- Development Plan (DP) Roads: 34 new DP roads spanning 48.94 km are being developed at an estimated cost of ₹809.78 crore to improve connectivity in newly developed areas.
- Road Redesign & Expansions: Roads will be expanded at Mukai Chowk, Triveni Nagar, and Krishna Nagar to minimize delays. A new rotary is planned at M M Chowk in Kalewadi.
- Signal-Free Corridor: Construction is underway on a corridor from Godown Chowk to Bhakti Shakti Junction on Spine Road to ensure uninterrupted traffic flow.
- Flyover Extensions & Grade Separators: Planned at Dange Chowk and M M Chowk to facilitate smoother movement across high-traffic zones.
PCMC Commissioner Shekhar Singh reaffirmed the civic body’s commitment to urban mobility, stating, “Traffic congestion has been a growing challenge for Pimpri-Chinchwad. Our action plan focuses on practical, long-term solutions, including missing link roads, improved junction designs, and better alternative routes. Residents can expect significant improvements in their daily commute as we accelerate these projects.”
In addition to road infrastructure upgrades, PCMC is integrating public transport improvements and developing pedestrian and cycling infrastructure under the Harit Setu initiative. This initiative aims to create a well-connected, sustainable urban transport system benefiting all commuters.
Furthermore, PCMC has intensified its anti-encroachment drive to free up road space. In Wakad (Datta Mandir Road), 55 shops and 19 temporary sheds were recently removed to improve traffic movement.
With these measures, PCMC aims to transform Pimpri-Chinchwad’s traffic scenario, making daily commutes more efficient and ensuring a well-planned urban mobility system.
