The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has announced the re-introduction of paid parking facilities under flyovers as part of its Smart City initiative. This decision comes after the failure of its previous parking policy, which was discontinued in April 2024 due to challenges such as official inaction, political opposition, lack of police cooperation, and rising instances of intimidation.

The new plan will initially be implemented at three key locations: the Bharat Ratna JRD Tata Flyover at Nashik Phata, the Saint Mother Teresa Flyover in Chinchwad, and the Madhukar Pawale Flyover in Nigdi. Execution is expected to begin in the coming days.

The move aims to address Pune’s growing traffic congestion and inadequate road space, exacerbated by the city’s increasing population and rising number of vehicles. Unauthorized parking and vehicles obstructing traffic flow have been persistent issues, prompting the need for a revised policy.

Under the new system, parking fees have been set at Rs 5 per hour for two-wheelers and Rs 10 per hour for four-wheelers. Bapusaheb Gaikwad, Joint City Engineer of PCMC, stated that the policy will be expanded to other areas of the city following successful implementation at the initial three locations.
