Pune: PCMC Plans Direct Water Supply From Andhra Dam To Tackle Shortage; Aims To Curb Leakage And Wastage

The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has proposed a groundbreaking project to address the city’s persistent water shortage by directly sourcing water from Andhra Dam through a dedicated canal. Despite being allocated 100 million liters per day (MLD) from the dam, PCMC currently receives only 50-60 MLD due to significant leakage and wastage along the supply route.
To ensure a steady and clean water supply, the PCMC Water Supply Department has submitted a proposal to the Irrigation Department for key infrastructure, including a 9.5 km canal, jackwell, pump house, sub-station, and internal roads. The proposed canal will run from Andhra Dam to the brake pressure tank at Navlakha Umbre, passing through land owned by MIDC, farmers, PWD, and the Forest Department. A separate proposal has been submitted to secure necessary land permissions.
Additionally, one acre of land at Mauje Shire near Andhra Dam has been identified for constructing a jackwell, pump house, and sub-station to enhance water distribution efficiency. Currently, water from Andhra Dam is released into the Indrayani River and lifted at Nighoje Dam, but leaks and pollution along the route have increased purification costs and reduced supply.
The direct water supply project, estimated to cost ₹208 crore, is expected to provide long-term relief to Pimpri-Chinchwad’s growing water demands. Once implemented, it will ensure cleaner water for residents and reduce purification expenses, marking a significant step toward sustainable water management in the region.
