Pune on Yellow Alert, Mumbai and Nashik Too Brace for Thunderstorms as IMD Issues Rain Alert

Pune, Mumbai, Nashik, and several other cities in Maharashtra are set to experience unseasonal rain and thunderstorms from April 1 to 4, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). While the showers may provide temporary relief from the scorching heat, summer conditions will persist, with temperatures remaining above 35°C.
Pune on Yellow Alert for Thunderstorms
Pune has been placed under a ‘yellow alert’ for April 1, with thunderstorms, lightning, and squally conditions expected. The IMD has forecast rain and thunderstorms in the city from April 1 to 4, causing a slight dip in temperature. While the mercury may drop from 38°C to around 36°C, daytime temperatures will still hover above 35°C, keeping the summer heat intact.
By April 5, the city may witness more rain or thundershowers before transitioning to partly cloudy skies on April 6, with temperatures once again climbing to 38°C. The fluctuating weather is likely to create warm and dry conditions, with occasional spikes in humidity levels.
Precautionary Measures for Pune Residents:
- Stay hydrated and avoid prolonged sun exposure.
- Be cautious of sudden temperature changes.
- Follow IMD updates for weather alerts.
Mumbai Prepares for Possible Unseasonal Showers
Mumbai, too, is expected to witness unpredictable weather patterns in the coming days. The city experienced clear skies on Monday, but IMD predicts thunderstorms developing from Tuesday, April 2, onwards.
Mumbai’s Santacruz station recorded a maximum temperature of 33.2°C on Monday, close to normal for this time of year. However, humidity levels soared, reaching 78% in the morning and 58% by evening, making the weather feel much warmer.
Mumbai’s Weekly Weather Forecast:
- April 2 (Tuesday): Partly cloudy sky, with a possibility of thunderstorms and lightning.
- April 3 (Wednesday): Similar weather conditions, with potential showers in the afternoon.
- April 4-5 (Thursday-Friday): Temperatures may drop slightly, with partly cloudy skies.
- April 6-7 (Weekend): Cloudy conditions expected, with no major temperature fluctuations.
Nashik, Ahmednagar, Raigad, and Other Cities on High Alert
Alongside Pune and Mumbai, Nashik, Ahmednagar, Raigad, and several other parts of Maharashtra are also under a yellow alert today. The alert is expected to turn ‘orange’ by tomorrow (April 2) as the likelihood of heavy rains increases. The IMD has warned of thunderstorms and even hailstorms in certain regions, potentially affecting daily life and agriculture.
Cyclonic System Over Marathwada to Bring Rain Across Maharashtra
The sudden change in weather is due to a developing cyclonic system over Marathwada, which is expected to bring light to moderate rainfall along with gusty winds across Maharashtra. The impact will be felt in Vidarbha, Marathwada, Madhya Maharashtra, and North Maharashtra from April 2 to 5.
Farmers on Alert as Crops Face Threat
While the rain may provide relief from the heat, it is a cause of concern for farmers across Maharashtra. Unseasonal showers, along with hailstorms in some regions, pose a significant risk to crops, particularly in areas where farmers are already struggling with unpredictable weather conditions.
With an orange alert in place for heavy rains tomorrow, authorities have urged residents—especially those in low-lying areas prone to waterlogging—to stay informed and take necessary precautions. As Mumbai, Pune, Nashik, and other cities prepare for fluctuating weather, it’s advisable to brace for both humid heat and sudden downpours in the coming days.
