Pune: New Railway Line Proposed to Enhance Connectivity to Upcoming International Airport at Purandar
Pune is set to get a dedicated railway line connecting the upcoming international airport at Purandar with Rajewadi railway station on the Satara route. This proposal is part of Pune city’s and the district’s comprehensive mobility plan, aiming to enhance seamless connectivity for travelers.
The comprehensive mobility plan spans a 2,550 sq km area, covering Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA). The plan, estimated at Rs 1.26 lakh crore, will be implemented in three phases and includes metro expansion, strengthening of Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML), expansion of bus rapid transit (BRT) corridors, and improvements to railway routes.
As part of traffic improvement measures, upgrades are planned for Pune, Shivajinagar, Chinchwad, and Talegaon railway station areas. Additionally, a two-phase project will connect the Talegaon and Daund railway stations via an outer railway bypass. The first phase will establish a feeder service from Talegaon to Shikrapur via Uruli Kanchan, while the second phase will extend the railway line from Shikrapur to Daund.
On the Satara route, two railway stations—Jejuri and Rajewadi—are near the proposed airport, with Rajewadi being the closest. This makes it an ideal point for a dedicated railway spur line to the airport. The Pune-Lonavala railway line expansion is also expected to optimize the use of the outer railway bypass for traffic management. Another significant proposal includes shifting the passenger terminal from Fursungi station on the Pune-Miraj route to Shindawane.
The transport plan also prioritizes road connectivity enhancements for better access to the new airport. Key road improvements are proposed for:
- Dive Ghat via Hadapsar-Saswad
- Saswad-Bopdev Road
- Uruli Kanchan-Jejuri Road
- Saswad-Kapurhol-Bhor Road
- Khed-Shivapur-Saswad Link Road
These measures aim to create a seamless multi-modal transportation network, ensuring efficient travel to and from the new Purandar airport.
