Pune: Microsoft Acquires 16.4-Acre Land Parcel in Hinjewadi for ₹520 Crore
Global tech giant Microsoft has made a significant investment in Pune, acquiring a prime land parcel of 16.4 acres in the Hinjewadi IT Park for ₹519.72 crore. The transaction was completed in August 2024, as confirmed by documents accessed from property consultancy Square Yards. The deal involves the purchase of 66,414.5 square meters of land from Indo Global Infotech City LLP.
Microsoft Corporation (India) Private Limited, the company’s Indian arm, incurred a stamp duty of ₹31.18 crore and a registration fee of ₹30,000 for the transaction. This acquisition is part of Microsoft’s broader strategy to expand its commercial real estate footprint in India, particularly focusing on data center operations, development centers, and flexible office spaces.
Expansion in India’s IT Hubs
This latest purchase follows several major real estate investments by Microsoft in India. In 2022, the company acquired a 25-acre commercial plot in Pimpri-Chinchwad, Pune, for ₹328.84 crore from Finolex Industries. Earlier in 2024, Microsoft secured a 48-acre land parcel in Hyderabad for ₹267 crore, reflecting the company’s strategic expansion into key markets in India.
Microsoft’s increasing presence in India’s commercial real estate sector is primarily driven by its focus on strengthening its data center operations. The company currently operates data centers in Pune, Mumbai, and Chennai, reinforcing its commitment to supporting India’s growing digital infrastructure.
Workforce and Skilling Initiatives
In addition to its real estate acquisitions, Microsoft employs over 23,000 individuals across India in cities such as Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Pune. These teams contribute to a wide range of functions, including sales, marketing, research, development, and customer support.
In early 2024, Microsoft launched its “ADVANTA(I)GE INDIA” program as part of a global skilling initiative aimed at equipping 2 million people with AI and digital skills by 2025. This initiative is a key component of the company’s “Skills for Jobs” program, designed to create a future-ready workforce in India.
With these strategic investments and initiatives, Microsoft continues to strengthen its foothold in India’s digital landscape, contributing to both economic growth and the enhancement of the country’s technological capabilities.
