Pune: Metro To Finally Connect With Airport, Making Kharadi Interchangeable Transport Hub Of The City

Union Minister Muralidhar Mohol announced on Monday that the Pune Metro will soon be linked to the Pune International Airport, with the Detailed Project Report (DPR) to be prepared by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). The move aims to enhance connectivity and ease travel for millions in the rapidly growing city.
Speaking after an Airport Advisory Committee (AAC) meeting, Mohol, who is also the Pune MP, emphasized the need to develop Kharadi as an Interchangeable and Multimodal Transport Hub. “Kharadi is a prime location due to its rapid commercial and residential growth. Establishing a transport hub here will ensure seamless metro access to the airport from all parts of the city,” he said.
Metro Expansion Plans
The proposed metro route will extend from Kharadi to Pune Airport as part of the Khadakwasla-Swargate-Hadapsar-Kharadi line. Mohol also suggested a new Katraj to Hinjewadi metro line to further improve connectivity.
Once completed, all four existing metro routes—Nigdi-Swargate, Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar, and Vanaz-Ramwadi—will directly connect to Lohegaon Airport. “This will benefit residents from Pimpri-Chinchwad and across Pune district,” Mohol added.
Progress on Purandar Airport
Addressing the long-pending Purandar airport project, Mohol stated that land acquisition is underway by MIDC, with notifications issued for affected villages. However, farmers from Pargaon protested at the Pune District Collector’s office against land acquisition, highlighting ongoing challenges.
With Pune’s population exceeding 10 million, Mohol stressed the need for future-ready infrastructure, ensuring the airport serves the city’s needs for decades to come.
