Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced that citizens will start receiving metered water bills from March 2026, following the completion of the ‘Equitable Water Supply Scheme.’ Municipal Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale revealed that 75% of the project has already been completed, with the remaining work slated for completion by December 2025.

The ₹12,618 crore municipal budget for 2025-26, presented before the Standing Committee, includes provisions for the scheme, which aims to provide uniform and adequately pressurized water to all city residents. Tenders worth ₹2,048 crore have been issued, with ₹1,471 crore already utilized. Water meter installations are underway, with 62 out of 141 designated zones completed.

To enhance system efficiency, PMC is employing advanced technology, including robotic machines, to detect leaks and unauthorized connections. A budget allocation of ₹50 lakh has been made for this purpose.

However, unpaid water bills remain a challenge, with outstanding dues reaching ₹727.96 crore due to faulty meters, duplicate billing, and unpaid dues from slum areas. PMC has collected ₹102 crore as of January 2025 and recovered ₹1.13 crore through Lok Adalat sessions in 2023-24.

Additionally, PMC plans to expand water supply to newly merged villages by constructing a water purification plant and implementing the Equitable Water Supply Scheme in these areas, pending state government funding.
