Pune: Infant Found in Jar in Daund Was Preserved for Five Years; Police Register Case

Daund, 30th March 2025 – In a shocking discovery, the male infant found in a jar in Daund was revealed to have been preserved for five years, as per the investigation report. The Daund police have registered a case due to violations of health and biomedical laws.
The incident traces back to a pregnant woman who delivered the baby at just 18 to 20 weeks in a private hospital in Gopalwadi, Daund. The hospital stored the fetus in a formalin solution and allegedly used it for training nursing students. This detail came to light in a report submitted by the district surgeon to the health department.
On March 25, multiple jars were found discarded in Daund’s garbage – one containing the deceased infant and others holding human body parts, sparking public outrage. The Daund police seized the jars and filed a case against an unidentified person. District Surgeon Dr. Nagnath Yampalle inspected the site and submitted his findings to Dr. Radhakishan Pawar, Deputy Director of Health, Pune Circle.
The report confirmed that one jar held an infant, while ten others contained human organs. An inquiry at Bhangaale Hospital in Gopalwadi revealed that these organs had been surgically removed and preserved without authorization.
Further investigation disclosed that a woman who visited the hospital on August 30, 2020, for abdominal pain had delivered the 18 to 20-week-old fetus. The hospital had preserved the fetus and other organs without approval and used them for educational purposes.
Dr. Radhakishan Pawar stated, “The probe found no violations of the Prenatal Sex Determination Act. However, unauthorized storage of human organs breaches the Anatomy Act, 1949, and improper disposal violates biomedical waste rules. A police case has been filed, and the medical superintendent of Daund Sub-District Hospital has issued a show-cause notice to the hospital.”
