Pune’s highways have witnessed a significant improvement in safety, with the number of accident-prone “black spots” reducing by nearly 50%, according to a recent survey by the Highway State Patrol (HSP) Pune division. The count has dropped from 170 to just 84, thanks to coordinated efforts between authorities and the public.

The survey, conducted over several months, identified high-risk zones and implemented corrective measures such as road widening, better signage, improved lighting, and increased patrolling. Key highways, including Solapur, Nashik, and Pune-Mumbai routes, saw targeted interventions to enhance safety.

Vikrant Deshmukh, Superintendent of Police, HSP Pune, credited the success to collaborative efforts. “This achievement reflects the dedication of all stakeholders—government agencies, local bodies, and citizens. We’ve not just fixed roads but also fostered a culture of safety,” he said.

Decline in Accidents & Fatalities
In a related development, Pune division recorded a 13% drop in traffic accidents and fatalities in 2024 compared to 2023. Official data shows fatal accidents decreased from 1,191 to 1,035, while total accidents fell from 2,190 to 2,077.

Deshmukh attributed this to stricter enforcement against speeding, seatbelt/helmet violations, and awareness campaigns. “While progress is encouraging, we aim for zero fatalities through continued vigilance and public cooperation,” he added.

Public Response
Residents and commuters welcomed the changes. Prakash Shinde, a daily traveler on the Pune-Solapur highway, noted improved signage and lighting, while Priya Ramesh praised increased police presence on the Satara highway.

With sustained efforts, Pune’s highways are moving toward safer travel for all.
