Pune: To address increasing traffic congestion during peak hours, the Pune City Traffic Police have imposed a ban on heavy vehicles at Bhumkar Chowk and Control Chowk on Sinhagad Road near Narhe. This decision aims to improve traffic flow and ensure resident safety amid rising complaints.

The Bhukum Chowk Underpass area, recently brought under the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) due to boundary expansions, has seen a surge in residential projects and industrial activities. The presence of schools, colleges, and hospitals along this stretch has further worsened congestion, often leading to severe traffic jams, especially during peak hours. The narrow roads have added to the challenge, prompting numerous complaints from locals.

In response, Amol Zhende, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Pune City, has enforced new traffic regulations under the Motor Vehicles Act (Sections 115, 116(1)(a)(b), 116(4), and 117), following a Maharashtra Government notification dated September 27, 1996.

Key Order Highlights:

  • Restricted Area: From Bhumkar Chowk Underpass to Shri Control Chowk and connecting internal roads.
  • Prohibited Vehicles: All types of heavy, slow-moving, and oversized vehicles, excluding emergency services like fire brigade, police, and ambulances.
  • Restricted Timings: 7:00 AM to 11:00 AM and 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM.
  • Ban on Parking: Heavy vehicle parking during restricted hours is strictly prohibited.

The regulations aim to reduce congestion, enhance road safety, and provide smoother traffic flow for residents in the affected areas.
