In a significant move, the Pune City Sub-Registrar Office has started returning around 75,000 original registered documents from the period 1985 to 2001 to their rightful owners. These documents were lying unclaimed in the 9 sub-registrar offices in Pune. The initiative was officially launched on Friday, April 4, 2025, by Maharashtra Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule.

Speaking about the initiative, Pune City Sub-Registrar Santosh Hingane informed that the list of these documents, along with updated addresses of all the sub-registrar offices and QR codes for their Google locations, has been published on the official website of the Registration and Stamps Department.

Senior Officials Present

State Additional Chief Secretary (Revenue, Registration & Stamps) Rajesh Kumar and Inspector General of Registration, Maharashtra, Ravindra Binwade were also present during the launch ceremony.

According to officials, nearly 1.5 lakh documents from 1985 to 2001 were completely registered and processed at the sub-registrar offices numbered Haveli 1 to 9 in Pune city. However, many document owners did not collect their original documents at that time. When these owners later approached the offices, they often faced difficulties, delays, and harassment due to unavailability or difficulty in locating the documents.

Verification and Preparation of Documents

To resolve this issue, Pune City Sub-Registrar Santosh Hingane initiated a verification drive of all old documents stored in Haveli Sub-Registrar Offices 1 to 9. In the first phase, a list of 75,000 documents has been prepared and made ready for return to the concerned parties.

This list has been published on the Registration and Stamps Department website. In addition, updated addresses and QR codes for Google locations of all concerned offices are also available online.

How to Collect Your Document

Parties whose documents are listed must visit the concerned sub-registrar office with their original receipt and a valid identity proof to collect their original registered documents.

“Document return after registration is the legal right of the concerned party,” said Santosh Hingane, Pune City Sub-Registrar.

Background of the Issue

Since 2002, after the scanning process was introduced, original documents have been returned to parties soon after registration. Before 2002, the process involved photocopying, manual writing, and making copies, which took time. Due to this, documents from 1985 to 2001 were not immediately handed over, especially when certain notings, signatures, or copies were pending.

Many owners followed up and collected their documents over time, but about 1.5 lakh documents remained unclaimed in the offices.

Importance of Original Documents

Returning original documents after registration is the legal right of every party. These documents are essential for availing loans by keeping them as mortgage with banks, for resale of properties, and for various other purposes.
