Pune: A 21-year-old married woman has been arrested by the Wanowrie police for allegedly dumping a male foetus in a drainage ditch behind Rajgad Housing Society at Surakshanagar, Hadapsar. The foetus was recovered by the Hadapsar police on March 17 after residents complained about a foul smell from the clogged and overflowing drainage.
Initially, an FIR was registered against unknown individuals, and investigations were launched to identify the parent(s) responsible. Police questioned society residents, sent wireless messages to nearby police stations, and contacted private and civic hospitals in search of a woman who had recently undergone an abortion or miscarriage, but no immediate leads were found.
The breakthrough came when a police team identified a woman who had recently terminated her pregnancy. Sub-inspector Avinash Shinde confirmed, “We arrested the woman on March 21 after she admitted to dumping the foetus. She claimed she did not wish to conceive the baby for personal reasons.”
Further investigations revealed that the woman had taken abortion pills, resulting in the foetus slipping into the drainage system while she was in the washroom. She initially remained silent out of fear of backlash from society members. However, police officers Rupali Takawane, Mangal Pardeshi, and assistant sub-inspector Kishore Rane gained her confidence, leading to her confession.
The woman was booked under Section 94 (concealing birth of a child) of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita, a bailable offense carrying a punishment of up to two years. She was released on bail at the police station level. No action has been taken against her husband, a welder.
