Pune: Family Attacked in Mundhwa Road Rage Incident Over Honking, Father-Son Duo Arrested
Pune witnessed a shocking incident of road rage in the Mundhwa area when a family was violently attacked over a honking dispute on Thursday night. The incident, which took place around 9 pm on Mundhwa-Koregaon Park Road near Carnival Hotel, has raised public safety concerns.
The victim, Rajesh Nathoba Waghchoure, was traveling with his wife Suvarna and daughter Sanskruti towards Koregaon Park when the attack occurred. Due to severe traffic congestion, Waghchoure honked seeking space, which enraged the occupants of the vehicle ahead, identified as Raju Gaikwad and his son, Shubham Gaikwad.
An argument broke out when Shubham Gaikwad, riding a two-wheeler, confronted Waghchoure. The confrontation quickly escalated into violence. Shubham allegedly punched Waghchoure in the face, causing serious injuries to his eyes. The Gaikwads further assaulted the family and vandalized their car using a tiger claw-shaped weapon and stone pelting, leading to injuries to his wife and daughter.
Eyewitnesses reported that several bystanders attempted to intervene but were unsuccessful due to the aggressive behavior of the accused. Mundhwa police responded promptly after being alerted and arrested both Raju and Shubham Gaikwad on the spot.
Senior Police Inspector Nilkanth Jagtap confirmed that a case has been registered under sections 118(2), 118(1), and 324(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). He stated, “The argument over traffic and honking turned violent. The accused are currently in police custody until January 13, 2025, and the investigation is ongoing,” reported Free Press Journal.
Preliminary reports suggest that the Gaikwads have a history of criminal activities, further intensifying the seriousness of the incident. The police are continuing their investigation.
