Pune, September 08, 2024: A horrific drunk-driving incident occurred late Sunday night at Paud Phata in Kothrud, Pune, where a heavily drunk tempo driver rammed into multiple vehicles, killing one woman and injuring several others.

The incident took place around 11 PM on September 8, when the tempo driver, identified as Ashish Pawar, collided with four to five vehicles while under the influence of alcohol.

Pawar’s reckless driving spree began at Karishma Chowk, where he initially hit two children near a traffic signal. Instead of stopping, he sped off, ramming into several more vehicles. The chaos continued as Pawar jumped a signal near the Savarkar Flyover and collided with two bikes and a car, severely injuring seven to eight people.

Among the victims were Shrikant Amarale and his wife, Gitanjali Amarale, who were traveling on a two-wheeler when the tempo struck them. Both were rushed to Sahyadri Hospital for treatment, where Gitanjali succumbed to her injuries. Shrikant remains in critical condition.

The accused was captured by locals at Paud Phata after the rampage and was handed over to the police. Eyewitnesses reported that Pawar was so drunk that he could barely stand or open his eyes. A case has been registered against him under relevant sections of the BNS and Motor Vehicle Act.

The accident has left the community in shock, with many calling for stricter enforcement of drunk-driving laws.
