Pune: DPR for Proposed Tunnels Between Shaniwarwada and Swargate to Be Ready in Six Months

Pune, 30th March 2025 – The Maharashtra Public Works Department (PWD) is set to complete the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for two underground tunnels aimed at easing traffic congestion on Shivaji and Bajirao Roads within the next six months. The tunnels, proposed to connect Shaniwarwada to Swargate and Shaniwarwada to Sarasbaug, will be built approximately 22 meters underground.
Kasba Peth MLA Hemant Rasne emphasized that the project is designed to improve traffic flow in Pune’s old city areas. “The PWD is evaluating multiple entry and exit points to optimize connectivity. The final project cost will be determined after the DPR is finalized,” he said.
Shivaji Road and Bajirao Road, key commercial and educational corridors, frequently face severe traffic jams. Local traders urged authorities to prioritize safety, especially near schools and markets.
Rasne assured that the proposed road tunnels would not interfere with the ongoing Shivajinagar-Swargate Metro line, as the Metro is being constructed at a deeper level of 30 meters. Meanwhile, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and traffic police have been instructed to crack down on illegal encroachments and parking to alleviate congestion.
