Pune, 30th March 2025: Despite temperatures soaring to 40°C, demand for air coolers in Pune remains surprisingly sluggish this season. While a variety of models are available, Punekars have shown little enthusiasm for purchasing them. Shopkeepers report that sales are currently at only 70% of last year’s levels, even though March 2024 was hotter.

Traditionally, summer begins after Holi, and three weeks into the season, several areas have already crossed 40°C. This winter was relatively mild, with February temperatures exceeding 35°C in many parts of the city.

The weather department has predicted an unusually intense summer, and Maharashtra has already recorded a heatstroke-related fatality. In response, the state government has directed agencies to prepare for heat waves. While air conditioners remain unaffordable for many, air coolers—especially Nagpuri coolers—are emerging as a preferred alternative.

Why Nagpuri Coolers Are Gaining Popularity

Nagpuri coolers are evaporative coolers, which cool air by evaporating water. Their rising demand can be attributed to:

  • Affordability: Cheaper than air conditioners.
  • Eco-friendliness: Consume less electricity.
  • Ease of installation & maintenance: Simple setup and minimal upkeep.
  • Effective for large spaces: Designed to cool bigger areas efficiently.

How Nagpuri Coolers Work

  1. Water is drawn into the cooler, wetting the cooling pads.
  2. Air passes over the wet pads, and evaporation cools it.
  3. The cooled air is then circulated into the room.

What to Consider When Buying One

  • Water tank capacity: Larger tanks run longer.
  • Airflow (CFM): Higher CFM means better air circulation.
  • Cooling pads: Thicker pads improve cooling efficiency.

Despite the advantages, overall cooler sales have not picked up as expected. Shopkeepers remain hopeful that demand will rise as temperatures climb further.

“Sales are slower than last year, but Nagpuri coolers are in demand due to better cooling at lower prices,” said a shopkeeper. Another vendor added, “They’re cost-effective and cool better than branded ones, though they need more maintenance. This year, buyers prefer affordability over durability.”
