Pune: Bopdev Ghat Remains Unsafe, 40 Couples Penalized in Police Crackdown

Pune, April 1, 2025: Bopdev Ghat, a popular scenic spot on the Pune-Saswad route, continues to pose security risks, especially at night. Despite previous incidents, including a shocking gang-rape case a few months ago, the area remains a hub for late-night visitors. During a recent police patrol, Kondhwa Police found around 40 couples in the deserted ghat and took action under the Mumbai Police Act Section 122.
Shocking Findings During Midnight Patrol
A special police team conducting night rounds discovered several two-wheelers parked suspiciously in the area. Upon further investigation, officers found young men and women gathered in secluded spots. A senior female police officer and her team detained two young men and a woman, later informing their parents. Authorities believe their intervention may have prevented another serious crime.
Security Concerns and Inadequate Measures
Bopdev Ghat has seen a rise in illegal activities, including alcohol consumption. Local residents and commuters have repeatedly urged authorities to implement stricter security measures. Although police checkpoints and patrols are in place, the lack of streetlights and CCTV cameras makes the area vulnerable. Despite a survey being conducted, no security installations have been implemented yet.
Need for Urgent Action
Senior officials, including Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar and Senior Inspector Vinay Patankar, have taken note of the issue. However, with Bopdev Ghat falling under multiple administrative bodies—Pune Municipal Corporation, Zilla Parishad, PMRDA, and the Forest Department—coordination remains a challenge. Social activists stress the urgent need for CCTV cameras and better lighting to deter criminal activity.
“Regular police patrols are ongoing, but the area remains dark and unsafe. Many couples and intoxicated individuals are now shifting to Jagdamba Bhavan near Pisoli. Authorities must expand patrols and install surveillance systems to prevent crime,” said a social worker nearby.
With growing concerns over safety, local representatives are being urged to allocate funds for immediate infrastructure improvements.
