Pune, April 23, 2025: A massive fire broke out in a slum in Pune’s Chandan Nagar during the early hours of Wednesday, gutting at least 50 shanties. The blaze, which started around 5 am in the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar slum area, triggered explosions of at least 15 gas cylinders before being brought under control by over 15 fire tenders.

Officials from the Pune Fire Brigade confirmed that no casualties were reported, but the fire caused extensive damage to the tin-walled shanties. More than 80 firefighters worked tirelessly, deploying additional water tankers to contain the flames, which were finally controlled by 6:45 am. A cooling operation followed to prevent secondary fires.

“Residents evacuated quickly, saving whatever belongings they could, but most of their possessions were destroyed,” a fire brigade official said. The exact cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation.
