The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has proposed a 20-kilometer subway connecting Yerwada to Katraj at an estimated cost of ₹8,000 crore to address the city’s north-south connectivity gap. A Detailed Project Report (DPR) outlining the plan, including the use of advanced “twin tunnel” technology for safety and efficiency, will soon be submitted to the Maharashtra government for approval.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis directed officials to expedite the proposal during a recent PMRDA meeting, stressing the need for modern infrastructure to ease traffic congestion. Pune Municipal Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale highlighted the project’s significance, stating, “While east-west corridors exist, north-south connectivity remains limited. This subway aims to bridge that gap.”

Before final approval, the project will undergo rigorous site inspections and analysis. However, skepticism looms among citizens due to stalled initiatives like the Pune-Mumbai Hyperloop and river transport proposals. Residents question whether the Yerwada-Katraj subway will transition from blueprint to reality.
