Power Outage Hits Pune’s Hinjewadi IT Hub, Repairs Underway

Pune’s bustling Hinjewadi IT hub faced a power crisis on Friday evening, leaving around 200 IT companies and numerous residential and commercial consumers in the dark for nearly an hour. The outage, lasting from 5:29 pm to 6:15 pm, was initially resolved but was followed by another disruption at 7 pm due to a tripped tower line. Officials quickly restored power, but the incident raised concerns over infrastructure reliability in the tech-heavy region.
The breakdown occurred in the 220 kV Pirangut-Hinjewadi-1 underground power lines, causing a sudden shortfall of nearly 100 MW. To manage the situation, the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) arranged alternative power supply overnight.
Repairs Expected to Finish by Sunday Night
The Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company Limited (MSETCL) has already begun repair work, which started on Saturday morning. According to Vitthal Bhujbal, superintendent engineer of MSETCL’s Pune division, the process involves excavation, inspection, and joint repairs, which could take 12 to 24 hours.
“Since IT companies are closed over the weekend, power demand remains low, reducing the need for additional cuts,” Bhujbal explained. “However, with offices reopening on Monday, we aim to complete repairs by Sunday night to ensure uninterrupted supply.”
Authorities are working to prevent further disruptions, but businesses in Hinjewadi, Wakad, Maan, Marunji, and Kasarsai remain on alert. The incident highlights the growing strain on Pune’s power infrastructure as the IT sector continues to expand rapidly.
