Poster urging women to dress appropriately responded with another poster in Pune
In a recent incident in Pune, a poster urging women to dress modestly ignited a quick response from a local women’s group, highlighting the ongoing debate over appropriateness of dressing. The incident, shared by journalist Yogesh Sadhwani on the social media platform X, has quickly gained traction online.
The initial poster, displayed prominently on a wall at a walking track in Deccan Pune, featured an elderly woman in a saree and carried a message from the self-proclaimed “Mast Group” (which translates to “Cool Group”). The message read: “Ladies, Wear clothes in such a way that nobody looks at you with bad eyes.”
This advice however, did not go well with many, especially a women’s group that decided to counteract the message with a poster of their own. Their response, attributed to the “Trast Group” (roughly translating to “Fed-up Group”), was equally pointed: “Men, Keep your mind so strong that your mind does not wander no matter what clothes others are wearing.”

Sadhwani’s photograph of the two contrasting posters has resonated with many on X, where users have expressed their opinions and shared personal anecdotes related to advise regarding dressing. One user, Sneha Sharma, recounted an encounter with a senior citizen who criticized her for wearing shorts, despite the fact that he himself was dressed similarly.
Another user suggested that the reply poster should have been more prominent and emphasized that dressing appropriately is essential for both men and women, advocating for societal etiquette over gender-specific moral directives.
