Focus on Environmental Improvement

Each year, the PMC allocates funds for lake maintenance, including cleaning and the removal of invasive water plants. This time, the ₹2 crore grant from Swachh Bharat Abhiyan will be directed towards beautification efforts to enhance the visual and ecological appeal of these lakes. The Solid Waste Management Department is overseeing the project, ensuring that it contributes positively to the city’s environmental landscape.

The allocated funds for the four lakes are as follows:

  • ₹41.88 lakh each for Pashan Lake and Katraj Lake
  • ₹49.42 lakh for Model Colony Lake
  • ₹49 lakh for Peshwa Lake

Key Beautification Measures

The PMC has outlined several improvements under the project:
Planting trees around the lakes to improve greenery
Construction of concrete roads for better accessibility
Proper garbage disposal systems to maintain cleanliness
Development of jogging tracks for public fitness and recreation
Strict action against littering to ensure the sustainability of the improvements

Tackling Pollution and Water Retention Issues

One of the major concerns for Pune’s lakes has been pollution caused by untreated drainage water. PMC has previously taken steps, such as setting up a drainage system in 2017 to prevent contaminated water from entering Katraj Lake. Additionally, a sewage treatment plant with a capacity of two million liters per day is under development.

Apart from this, lake cleaning will also be undertaken under the Amrut Yojana, a central government initiative aimed at improving urban infrastructure.

A Cleaner, Greener Pune

PMC officials believe that these efforts will significantly enhance Pune’s natural beauty while reducing pollution and improving air quality. By making these water bodies more attractive and sustainable, the city is taking a crucial step toward environmental conservation and urban development.
