PCMC’s Rakshak Chowk Subway Nears Completion, Promising Smoother Commutes for Pune Residents

Pimpri-Chinchwad’s daily commuters can finally breathe a sigh of relief as the long-awaited subway at Rakshak Chowk on Sangvi-Kiwale Road is rapidly taking shape. The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has accelerated construction, with key structural elements now in their final stages. Once operational, this subway is expected to drastically reduce traffic congestion, offering a seamless and signal-free route for thousands of vehicles.
Progress So Far
The reinforced cement concrete (RCC) box foundation work is nearing completion, while ramps on both ends are steadily progressing. About 80% of the casting work for the RE panels is done, and supporting infrastructure—including drainage systems and directional signage—is being installed simultaneously. To minimize disruptions, temporary alternate routes have been set up, ensuring smooth traffic flow during construction.
Why This Subway Matters
Sangvi-Kiwale Road serves as a crucial artery connecting Pimpri-Chinchwad to Pune and Mumbai. With increasing urbanization and industrial growth, traffic congestion has become a persistent issue, especially with BRT buses, school vehicles, and office commuters crowding the route. The new subway aims to streamline movement, cutting down travel time, fuel consumption, and emissions.
