No water cut in Pune this year | Water Supply Department
In a major relief for the residents of Pune, the water supply department, Pune Municipal Corporation has decided to not impose any water cuts in Pune city this year.
According to a report by Pune Times Mirror, the head of water supply department at Pune Municipal Corporation, Nandkishor Jagtap said, ““The irrigation department is right about the 3.5 TMC stock; neck-to-neck storage is available. Also, the Meteorological department has predicted the early arrival of monsoon by the first week of June, so in that case there will be no requirement for water cuts.”
He further added, ” We have scheduled a meeting in the first few days of June to decide on what appropriate action is required regarding water cuts depending on rainfall activity.”
According to Water Resources Department, Government of Maharashtra, the current stock of water in four dams of the Khadakwasla Dam project is as follows:
- Khadakwasla – 22.56 Mcum
- Panshet – 53.19 Mcum
- Warasgaon – 74.61 Mcum
- Temghar – 3.64 Mcum
This totals to 154 Mcum (Million Cubic Meters) or roughly 5.44 TMC (Thousand Million Cubic Feet). This stock also includes water for commercial and irrigation purposes and approximately 3.5 TMC will be available to PMC till the onset of monsoon this year.
The city consumes about 1.5 TMC per month and in the next 50 days till July 15, the requirement will be around 2.5 TMC. Against that, the city has a buffer of 3.5 TMC, so no water cuts.
