In a major boost for higher education in India, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis revealed that five top foreign universities—three from the U.S., one from Australia, and one from the U.K.—are keen to set up campuses in Navi Mumbai’s upcoming Edu City. This initiative is part of the larger Third Mumbai project, designed to transform the region into a hub for education, innovation, and infrastructure.

Speaking at the U.S.-India Business Council (USIBC) event, Fadnavis confirmed that the interested U.S. institutions rank among the world’s top 50 universities. Formal agreements will be finalized once the University Grants Commission (UGC) grants approval. The state government is already in talks with the UGC to fast-track these collaborations.

Navi Mumbai’s Edu City will be a cornerstone of the Third Mumbai development, which promises state-of-the-art infrastructure, including a 21-kilometer sea link and an operational airport by mid-2025. The new city is expected to surpass Mumbai in size and will also house data centers, medical facilities, and other key sectors.

Beyond education, Fadnavis outlined plans to develop Sambhaji Nagar as an electric vehicle hub and elevate Gadchiroli’s steel production capacity. These initiatives underscore Maharashtra’s push to become a leader in both education and industrial growth.
