DGCA and AAI Conduct Readiness Checks

A major milestone was reached with the recent full-day inspection conducted by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). These inspections assessed the aerodrome’s operational preparedness and safety measures. The DGCA has been actively reviewing NMIA’s infrastructure, including new flight instruments, to ensure the airport meets all safety and regulatory requirements for its aerodrome certification.

International Operations Expected by July 2025

According to Arun Bansal, CEO of AAHL, international flights from NMIA are expected to commence by July 2025. This timeline follows a series of rigorous validation tests, including a commercial validation flight conducted in December 2023. An IndiGo aircraft became the first commercial jet to land at the under-construction airport, marking a key step in the certification process.

State-of-the-Art Infrastructure with Multi-Modal Connectivity

One of NMIA’s defining features is its pioneering multi-modal connectivity, making it the first airport in India to be seamlessly linked by road, rail, and metro. In the near future, it is also expected to be accessible via waterways, enhancing travel convenience for passengers and boosting regional connectivity.

Passenger Capacity and Expansion Plans

In its initial phase, NMIA will be equipped to handle 20 million passengers annually, with an estimated 8-10 million domestic travelers expected in the first six months alone. As the second airport serving the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, NMIA is poised to complement the heavily trafficked Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), which currently handles over 50 million passengers per year.

Future Prospects and Investment

The entire project, spanning five phases, is estimated to cost around Rs 18,000 crore. Once fully completed, NMIA will be a world-class aviation hub, reinforcing Mumbai’s status as a global travel destination.

With its upcoming launch, NMIA is set to redefine air travel standards in India, bringing convenience and efficiency to millions of passengers while bolstering the nation’s aviation infrastructure.
